June 4, 2010, Newsletter Issue #49: Laboratory Jobs: Getting a Raise

Tip of the Week

Whether you haven’t had a review in a while, or discovered you’re severely underpaid, at some point – it’s time to ask for a raise. But approaching your laboratory manger with this can be tricky. Here’s a few tips to get started.

Set up a meeting. Tell your laboratory supervisor that you need to discuss something important. And, before the meeting, make sure to prepare. Contact comparable laboratories in your area and ask for salary ranges. Use this information to back up your request for a boost in compensation.

Make a list of accomplishments. Asking for more money because you “need it” won’t get you a raise. However, a concrete list of accomplishments and contributions to your laboratory will help back up your case.

Be prepared for your manager’s answer. Despite your best efforts, your manager may explain she simply can’t give you a raise right now. In this case, consider contacting a laboratory staffing firm, like Delta Pharma. They can help you find laboratory jobs that meet your career and income goals.
